Jinn cocked a brow before fishing three gold out of his pouch. "Hope I run out of gold before the town runs out of beer, otherwise we're gonna be in mess of trouble. This lockdown, am I right?" He laughed and planted the gold on the counter, and pushed one of the gold pieces slightly aside with his pinky in one smooth motion. Taking his mug, he looked back to the captain.
((I'd like to roll an insight check to see if this lady's made a mark of us. One price for locals, one price for tourists, etc.))
"Place like this seems like it sees a lotta different folks from a lotta different parts of town. Anyone bringin' in any good news? Always keepin' an ear out for work. Or play."

Crystal looked around, and while there seemed to be space at various tables, most of the gamblers looked gruff or drunk, or a mean combination of both. It was hard to tell what would be considered a 'welcoming' table, but there didn't seem to be any hazard against walking over and asking to join a game.
The drink would make it easier. It was definitely rum, only slightly watered down. Stronger than ale, but probably not worth five silver.
Jinn eye the Captain for a moment and got a sense that she was an honest business woman. Mostly. She did seem to be taking advantage of the newcomers, but from the taste of the ale, it wasn't by much. The rum was good enough for the coin, and there was an undercurrent of... not quite desperation in her casual banter, but... a kind of uneasiness. The tension of a business owner concerned about their business, and upcharging to make sure ends were met.
"You're welcome to play, darlin'," the Captain said to Crystal, "but be mindful - these days no one's much playing for fun, 'less you've got some coin to burn. The high rollers hang out downstairs, with the real sharks." Turning back to Jinn, she sipped her drink before continuing. "Usually I'd say that there's always work to be done somewhere, but with the harbor on lockdown and no ships coming or going, there ain't much opportunity for that either."
The Captain shook her head. "Good news is hard to come by, these days. Best we can hope for is for the ale to keep flowing."

Rey was fairly satisfied with the brew, appreciating that it wasn't completely watered down. She kept an eye on Crystal, watching her watch the tables for a place to join, but seemed to be holding off herself, for now.

Hmm, there didn't seem to be any tables of guys that wouldn't instantly try to hit on her. Not that they were all horrid-looking, but that's 100% not what she was here for, and she wasn't entirely in the mood to field people trying to get their beds warm. That said, the Captain didn't mind telling them about where the high rollers were-- even if it was just to keep the newcomers from getting too casually curious in that area. She took another sip of her (decent) drink and, after watching the players at one table groan at another player's winning hand, looked back to the Captain.
"How high is 'high' for rolling around here, during a lockdown? I'm not a noblewoman, but if they're playing a couple gold a hand in... I don't know, Rummy or Craps, I can spare a few and not worry about dinner tonight."

"We keep the buy-in at five gold standard downstairs," the Captain said. "Rich enough to dissuade casual players, poor enough to encourage a reasonable turnover."

Jinn grinned and looked from the Captain and toward his party. "Well damn." He laughed, spreading his arms out as he took a step backwards toward the stairs. "Whaddya say boys? Sounds like we're 'bout to turn our luck around." He glanced at the captain. "Thanks for the tip, Cap. Sounds just rich enough for my blood."
And with that he took his drink and headed toward the stairs. "C'mon, let's game."

Rey shook her head, giving a lingering glance at the tables around them. Oh well. At least if they seemed like bumbling idiots willing to waste their money, it should keep people's guards down. With a sigh and possibly the slightest smile, she followed after Jinn. "Just don't lose your stash. I ain't paying for your food later if you're broke."

As Jinn made his way to the stairs, a pair of bouncers made their way up past him, one muttering about stupid dead birds as he passed. One of the bouncers moved back to the bar, while the other made his way up to the main deck.
Leading the way downstairs, Jinn found that this lower deck was more relaxed than the deck above. Windowless and lit only by oil lanterns hanging by chains from the ceiling, this deck featured rich carpets, a second bar, couches for lounging, and coffee tables where patrons played cards. The patrons here were dressed in finer clothes than those above - merchants, most likely. None appeared rich enough to be considered nobility.
Except for one.
Towards the stern of the ship, past another enclosed stairway and a pair of lounging thugs, were two couches set opposite each other with a coffee table between them. On the table was a leather folding case and a few parchments of various sizes. On one couch sat a dark-haired woman in shabby, travel-worn clothing, leaning forward with an eager, desperate look on her face. On the other lounged a man in rich black leathers, his black, wavy hair greased back, a pointed goatee on his sharp-featured face. He seemed to be in discussion with the woman, and appeared far more at ease than she was.
Perched on the couch above his shoulder was a strange bird the size of a large cat. From a distance, its details couldn't be made out in the comfortable lighting of the deck, but its wings appeared leathery, and it had a long, lizard-like tail, with a series of spines running down its back from head to tail tip.

Crystal pursed her lips to keep herself from whistling-- this was pretty posh, more so than any side alley gambling area she would have spied in her hometown. Even in this place, it was easy enough to spot the more private area of the room where that pet-owning man was. While Crystal was quite interested in knowing what that creature was, she didn't think it'd be good for them all to stay crowded.
"Alright, we're here," she whispered-- mostly to Jinn, though her party could hear her over the din. "I think we should split up and feel some people out. You've got one with you and we'll be nearby."

"That woman looks like she's trying to make a deal..." Vincent whispered, as he scoped out the room. He didn't know what the hell was on the couch, but he didn't like it.
"Maybe Cerys can eaves drop." He continued to whisper, directed to Jinn and Cerys now.

Hearing her name, Cerys would poke her head out of Jinn's pocket, whiskers twitching

Jinn laughed, "Whaddya take me for? Card table's my natural habitat." He then nodded and patted the pocket Cerys found herself in.
"Whaddyou think, time to squeak it out in the big wide world?" His voice was quiet as he turned to conceal the imminent deployment of the pocket-mouse. He trusted Cerys to scurry to the floor discretely. "Watch out for the weird bird..." With that statement made, he squinted toward the back of the room, trying to identify the scraggly thing.
((Perception: 11. Yuck.))

The creature was definitely the strangest bird anyone in the Hand had seen, but between the light and the distance, its details were hard to make out.
