Rey frowned as she scanned the room, trying not to look like she was watching what was happening in the back area. "I don't like the look of that thing..." She muttered, concealing her scowl with another swig of her drink.
"Bet gold to goblins that guy's the one we heard about. Got that fancy, self-important look 'bout him." Another glance over as she checked out the tables. "If'n card table's are your home, s'time to take a roost, I think."

"You think maybe that's what's killing the birds upstairs too?" It was a wild guess honestly, one Crystal wasn't sure if she believed, but it would've been nice to have an answer to that question. Dead birds showing up just because was indeed an omen most fowl.
"I'll be right nearby," Crystal continued as she motioned to one of the card tables. "If it gets loud, I'll be right over." She nodded to Jinn, then walked away to watch and join in.
"Alright, guys, she started with a smile by way of introduction, "what are we playing here, and have you ever been beat by a girl?"

Vincent wasn't terribly good at cards, or having a poker face, so he would follow after Jinn to whatever table he decided to go to.

Pocket mouse deployed, she'd skitter to the floor with the help of Jinn's turn and dart quickly to the wall.
Quick as a mouse, she'd make her way along the wall and to the table in question.

One of the men at the table Crystal approached was scowling at the cards on the table as his opponent gathered the pot onto his side of the table. The winner flashed up at Crystal and grinned. "Well now, not too often we see a young, fresh face around here. Tomas could use a chance to win back some of his money... you have enough for the buy in?"
Meanwhile, Cerys the Pocket Mouth slipped across the deck floor, darting along the edge of the wall toward the couches where their mark was sitting. As she approached, the 'bird' perked up and looked around, sniffing at the air - and Cerys realized it was no bird at all.
The creature was actually a small humanoid with wings, its face stretched forward to a point, its open mouth full of teeth. Rigid spines ran down from the back of its head, across its back, and down to the tip of its tail. Under its wings were a pair of arms folded over a small pitchfork with wickedly barbed tines. Its skin was a dark, mottled purple, its eyes a faintly glowing yellow.
As Cerys slunk close, it lifted its head, sniffing at the air and looking around. Its wings twitched. It half-rose... and then re-settled itself, folding its wings over itself as it turned its gaze to glare balefully at the woman on the opposite couch.
"...And if you just sign here," the nobleman was saying as he gestured to the papers on the table, "then our business will be complete. We've another run scheduled for this evening - we can send word to our man in Cliffgate tonight to have your sister and nephew ready for the next run into the city. We'll take care of the papers. By weeks end, you'll all be reunited, here in lovely Wachovia."
The woman looked anxious and desperate as she nodded and leaned forward, retrieving the quill the man offered to her so that she could sign the document.

Jinn glanced and nodded at Rey as she pointed the guy in the back out. He had the look of a noble. Upper class dandies always had that self-assured confidence, like the world couldn't touch them. Initially, Jinn thought, 'give me a reason.' A thought that was quickly tempered by the goals they had in mind, and the fact that they were essentially outsiders.
Even an idiot like him knew picking a fight here was a bad move. He couldn't see or hear what was going on in the back of the room, but maybe he could get a little closer. A quick nod to Crys as she moved to one table, Jinn moved ahead toward another. Divide, maybe conquer. Get some rumors, make some 'friends', maybe recoup that bar tab.
"Afternoon gents. Got room for a third?" He kept his ears open even while he mingled. This wasn't quite his kind of crowd, but the game of cards was a universal language, and Jinn was fluent in it.

Looked like it was guys and gals split. Keeping a position where she could keep an eye on that back area (and Cerys) if she could, she sidle up after Crystal. "Not too crowded for one more, are we?"

"Don't worry about me, because at the end of the night, I'm going to have enough money to cover all of your buy-ins for the rest of the week," Crystal replied with a cocky grin a she placed her coins on the table. "Though to be sure, I'm going to want to know if you guys have certain house or regional rules I'm not used to."
She pointedly didn't pay much mind to Rey. She didn't want the guys already at the table to feel like they were a hustling duo, but she wasn't sure if they saw the two ladies walk in. It was with a simple nod of acknowledgement that Crystal moved aside enough for Rey to have a comfortable amount of space-- even if she secretly wanted to just hug Rey's tail.
"Otherwise, deal me in. It's time to get this night going, right?"

Vincent was out of his element here, and following after Jinn, he spoke up behind him. "Ah, a fourth?" He did some gambling before, but nothing like this.

The man who had spoken to Crystal eyed her for a brief moment before his gaze moved to Rey, his eyebrows rising. The loser of the game glanced over at the women and grunted. "Toss your buy in the pot," he said, grabbing the deck of cards and giving it a shuffle. "I could use a change of pace at the table…"
Jinn and Vincent, meanwhile, approached a table with a middle-aged merchant and a bearded man with a furtive look about him. The merchant sighed as he set his cards down. "I fold. Good round." Noting the newcomers, he flashed a smile as his opponent gathered the pot, stacking the coins neatly in front of him.
"Good evening. By all means, new blood is welcome. You can afford the buy in, yes?"

"Heard it's steep, but with the town on fire as it is, I figure I may as well spread it around. Can't take it with ya, right?" He chuckled and took a seat by the backrest, turned it about face, and straddled it. He plopped five gold pieces on the table with a bit of a grin on his face. He gestured to himself and then Vincent shortly after, "Addler, this is Kienzle." He gave the duo a look over. "You guys locals?"

Rey fished the gold out of one of her pockets, trying to look casual. She had plenty for now, but habits and experience died hard, and tossing money wasn't something she enjoyed.
She'd caught the raised eyebrow and chuckled. "Well, I certainly bring that. Try not ta fleece a new face too bad in your excitement."

Crystal likewise put down her buy-in, nodding. "Adding a couple of faces to the game could change things up, yes. For my favor, I'm sure."
Cockiness seemed to be the flavor for now, as she winked at the dealer. "The way you're handling the cards, I take it you're a regular?"

The woman at the coffee table finished signing the paperwork and smiled nervously to the nobleman. "Thank you. Thank you so much, I don't know how I'll ever repay you!"
The nobleman leaned forward and pressed his hands on top of the woman's. "I'm just glad to help you and your family, my dear. Now go - there are many others who are seeking to be reunited with their loved ones that I must see to."
"Thank you - thank you Lord Vanthampur, thank you!"
The woman stood, bowing several times as she departed, the nobleman smiling after her. The smile faded once her back was turned and he turned back to the document she had signed with more genuine interest. "Mm...The name's familiar...." He reached over to a red leather folder and opened it, retrieving several parchments inside. After flipping through a few, he found what he was searching for and laid it out on the table, comparing names, and then pulled another sheaf of parchment out.
"Yes... that's what I thought...." Picking up the quill, he retrieved a small scrap of parchment and began scribbling upon it while the winged creature on the back of the couch began to preen itself.
The smiling merchant who had welcomed Jinn and Vincent nodded. "You can call me Durian. This is Jon. Well met, Addler, Kienzle. Indeed we are, but from your accent, I daresay you're from further afield, yes?"
"No promises," the gruff card player said to Rey as he began to deal out a new round of cards. Rather than answer Crystal, it was his companion, the winner of the previous round, who answered. "Regular enough. With all the bad business going on in town, the Lantern's one of the few entertainments left to enjoy."
