Taliesin was powering through his waffleritto when his face soured as if his food had an off taste at the mention of Cayne. He swallowed the bite in his mouth and shook his head. "Cayne doesn't really have an off switch. By all accounts he is ever vigilant and never sleeps. You don't get that reputation by joining the common folk in the countries pass time."
"He's especially not likely to in recently taken enemy territory." He set down his waffleritto. "Anyway, I'd be up for a game of Scrum. SO that's a team of three. Though we might have to pick up a Mareki or two depending on the groups we run into."

"How does one play Scrum? I am not familiar with Rugby, either." Konane glanced between the elves and Jaeger, then to Alastair. "Is that something you would play, Alastair?"

Alastair's brows rose. "Rugby? Oh, no. I never had the knees for it. Or the heels, ankles, elbows. Biceps..." He shook his head with a laugh.
"Believe it or not, I wasn't always this hale and healthy!"

Konane squinted some at Alastair. "You have very different ideas of what healthy is. You need to gain more weight."

Sae laughed. "Being muscular helps, but it's not the end all be all of being a decent scrum player- the best- well, second best, my mom was a champion scrummer in her conscription days- is Pyria. She's wiggly and hard to lay hands on." She put her coffee and breakfast to the side, leaning in to discuss- clearly invested.
"Scrum is a full contact sport, with a ball. It's usually a weighted leather ball, but I've seen people play it with cannon shot too. The ball is put in the center of the field. The teams line up on their goal line, and once the signal is given, everyone rushes to the ball. The goal is to take the ball across the other team's goal line. You can only pass or throw the ball backwards or laterally."
She shrugged.
"Beyond that, there's not any real rules. No magic, no armor, no tricks. Just agility and tactics."

"Cannon shots are... heavy," Jaeger said with a frown. "Thank goodness it can't be thrown forward, because I can imagine the number of crushed toes and missing teeth that would come with a forceful toss that was missed."
He eyed Alistair. "With no magic or armor, the belt that makes you stronger, and any potions, are out of the question. I wonder if they would even let me play. I don't doubt others strength," he said with a nod to Sae and Tali who had both bested him in single matches (though he was totally holding back), "but I also wasn't running forward, looking to bowl over anyone who wanted to stop me."

Taliesin chortled at all the back and forth and addressed the table, rather than focusing on any one person. "Most throws are tosses and occur at stomach level. Offensive use of the ball to the face is not done. No healing during the game. If you leave the field to get healed you are out. This leaves your team at a numbers disadvantage because there are no replacements."
He looked over to Sae with a smirk. "Sae is less a tactician. Squirrely and brute force in her play-style." He looked to Alastair. "If you can slip the grip of the other team and just run to the other end avoiding any grabs, then you can be a great player. But any team with a person who is strong tactically will often work out weak links and put the best counters to the play-style. No official titles, but tacticians will set names for play styles. I favored sea creatures when I had to run Scrums with Sae. Squid for people that were all hands, eel for the slippery fuckers, and Orca for the hunter/killers that focus on maximimum violence on takedowns to name a few. You might make a good eel."

"See, you do not need muscle to play. Just be the slippery one you always are." Konane chuckled, still working on her breakfast, taking the time to enjoy it, before things got difficult again.

Alastair tapped his chin some. "Well... Muscle may be optional, then. I'm a bit light on my feet. And I can say my spatial awareness is better than middling- grow up in an overstocked curiosity shop and you'll pick up a knack for catching things as they fall..." He thought a moment more.
"I've never been much for sports, but I know this group of ours is capable of just about anything."

As if to demonstrate her point, she'd finish off her toast.

Jaeger nodded, grinning. "I'm interested in getting scrummed. I'll become a scrummer, and join in the scrumming. There will be a large concentration of scrumocity, so I'll study the sport and become a scrumologist."
He tilted his head in thought. "Another title will be necessary-- one of the unofficial strategy roles. Is there a 'direwolf' or 'bull in a potion shop' role?"

Taliesin looked between each person as they spoke. He chuckled at Jaeger's profuse usage of the word scrum in different forms. He shook his head a little at the near absurdity of it.
"I call them leviathans. Players that move through others as if they don't exist, but not necessarily runners. Also not graceful because they don't need to be." He looked to his tea and then up to Sae and back around. "There is nothing to learn about scrum other than to trust your team, be aware of your surroundings, and work as a unit. If you get the ball, do what you do best, and if you are running into a block that you can't get around, hoik the shot over to a team member that can move it forward."

This was nice. She wished there were more days like this, but they had decided they had a job to do. The life of an adventurer. Someday, everything will be said and done, and then what? Scrum, food, and being with those you love.
