Porter shifted their pace somewhat, taking a position to the side and behind Pheuse, allowing them to "supervise" Tobias and Neuks as they escorted him. There was something about their manner -- most people meeting Porter would just assume they had an air of general formal propriety, but the more time spent around them, the more the subtle flavors of it were noticeable. In this case, it had strong undercurrents of authority with a bouquet of efficiency. The tick of their step could measure the movement of a watch.
"Excellent cadence, have you done this before? I have seen few more convincing guards actually serving." They gave a hint of a nod to Tobias (and a bardic inspiration delivered via compliment). "It's corporal, by the way," they offered, realizing they'd not clarified this earlier. They leaned forward politely, then, conversing with their charge. "I have some minor skill, Master Pheuse -- I have felt myself returning thanks to your care -- though it may be risky unless necessary."

Neuks took up her place and glanced over the crowd as they watched with a slight scowl, like she was sizing up the rabble in case there was trouble.

The guards were stuck. One one side was a crowd of, well, rabble. Paupers, beggars, drunks- the lost of society, pressing against the portcullis, trying to get in the city proper.
Then, the guards- standing on the wall, shouting orders. One large, goliath gentleman in heavy leathers was shouting orders.
And that left the party- pinning in the guards as they approached.

Tobias grunted an acknowledgement to Porter and then looked around, seeming to take everything in for the first time, with a profoundly unimpressed expression on his face.
"Fucking disgraceful," he muttered, in a 'whisper' loud enough to be heard from the nearest guards. "Who's in charge here? Got House business outside the gate and we need to be let through. Anyone? Anyone in charge of this mess?" His tone carried the scorn of a seasoned warrior who had seen the worst the Mourning had to offer, and was annoyed that something as insignificant as a riot had gotten in his way.

Pheuse stayed silent as they all moved into position. Only a quick nod acknowledged Porter's words. He opted for silence to keep from countering any action that Tobias and Porter needed to take.
Once at the gate he peered around his protectors and at the closed gate with a sigh. He didn't bother hiding any impatience as he waited to witness the result of Tobias' intimidation.

For the remainder of the approach to the gate, Porter's eyes stayed firmly locked on the gate. This was going to be tricky, they realized. The press of the people against it practically insured someone was going to get hurt. They started doing mental math, crossing off options one-by-one.
They looked up to the guards as Tobias cursed them, curious how much notice they'd taken of them. Quickly they recognized the chaotic circling of servants about a central authority. The goliath at its center. Porter tried to make out their rank, giving up once they realized their poor vantage point. (Quick question, I'll DM it -- assuming the answer is 'no' but will update if I'm wrong.) They would simply have to guess, then. "Gate Captain." Porter's voice carried over the din in measured, professional to contrast Tobias's surly tone, and intentionally so, hoping to be the reasonable counterpoint

Neuks wasn't sure if she could pull off a tough voice, so she kept quiet, letting Porter and Tobias take the lead. She made sure to keep her position and play her part though, crossing her arms and occasionally scanning the crowd and the guards.

The large goliath turned to face them, staring down at them with a sneer. "Mess or not, I'm in charge, and you'll mind your tone with me." He growled- seeming to be naturally loud enough that his voice carried.

Tobias folded his arms across his chest and straightened his back, standing tall, feet planted firmly. A solid stance, showing no sign of intimidation, but not aggressively throwing his weight around either. A captain wasn't as low on the totem pole as a guardsman, and was due respect. Tobias met his gaze evenly.
"Gate Captain," he acknowledged, his voice a touch less hostile. "House Cannith has an urgent errand that needs to be run in the outer city - one that can't wait for whatever... this... is to be settled. They've called upon some old favors with House Deneith, and I'm here to make sure no harm comes to my charge until he accomplishes his task and gets back to his superiors. Apologies for the curtness, but we need to get outside of the gate, immediately."

Pheuse stepped out to the side to be seen better along with house insignia. He folded back in surrounded by Porter, Tobias, and Neuks. He offered no words and simply waited to see what was to come of Tobias and Porter's attempts.

Message delivered, and admirably so -- Porter wished they could compliment Tobias on his performance. No need to muddy the waters with further explanation yet. Instead, they chose to remain to his side, standing in a power stance as they waited for the goliath to respond. They were trying to take his measure as he did, but the goliath seemed mostly a wall of surly ill-temper Insight 8).

Neuks tried to remember the relationship between house Cannith and house Deneith... was there something she could add to Tobias's story? ((History check - 4))
Nope, not one thing. Not one single damn thing.
She supposed she should brush up on her House history.

The Captain frowned deeply, looking at them, then at the rabble on the other side of the gate.
"I'd recommend putting off your errand for the evening and try again tomorrow. Seems like some ergot got into their shitty beer or wine or hells, bread by the looks of them. They're rambling about demons and darkness." He shrugged his shoulders, looking over them for a long moment.
"I'm not going to convince you not to go, am I, goat?"

"Nope," Tobias said cheerfully. "Be much easier for everyone involved if you let us pass through. We'll deal with whatever ghosts or goblinoids got this crowd riled up. Be much easier - and much less paperwork - for you to accomodate us."
He leaned forward slightly, lowering his voice. "You know how uppity the Houses can get. No one wants them causing a fuss."

Pheuse remained stoically silent. There was nothing he could add outside of the appearance of silent resolve. Hopefully the physical presence of the group combined with Tobias' word weaving would get them through.
Though, Pheuse began to think back to the train again. Thinking back to that boy who was so scared to come to this city and whom was accosted by demons in the dark of their slumber. Could this be another attempt of demons attempting to get to the child, or was this all coincidence and happenstance?
