Vanya waved at Alina as the paladin departed and then sat back down by her cauldron, setting Petal on the ground beside her while she retrieved the book Norixius had given her. "It makes no sense, with so much happening on this island, to be quibbling over terms when Alina is so good at her job... it is not like she is training to be a lich. And Adhanu and Caolead, they are not liches - even if I did call them that. Perhaps I should apologize... do you think I should apologize?"
Vanya glanced at Verdi as she set the book down before her.

Verdi thought there would be comfortable silence, but Vanya whipped up a storm of words in rapid fire, and left the tiefling blinking some at her question.
"Uh... Maybe..? They didn't seem offended..." He picked his notebook back up, and flipped back to the fresh page he started to write about the demon ape. Seeing Vanya had the book now, he assumed they would start translating that.
"But it wouldn't... hurt to say something. Even if they're not offended, they will take your concern as a positive."

"Mm... I'd like to know more about them, too..." Vanya began to settle down, and as she did, the speed of her speech slowed as well. "I never knew of positive energy, or negative energy, and their effects on the undead. Lia provided me with much to think on. I wonder if it would be possible to change the nature of the energy animating Jackson and Frederick without hurting them...?"
Vanya trailed off as she made a face, looking over the demon's book. "Feh. I hate reading abyssal. It makes me feel... dirty." She shivered.

"If we were able to change Caolead's power from the negative to the positive, I am sure there is a way for your... bony friends." Verdi's tail swayed some, then curled around the side of his leg and rested there.
"I am sure it is... not a pretty language to know. Is it... because of your... heritage?"

Vanya nodded idly at Verdi's comment about the skeletons, but a frown touched her lips as she studied the book.
"...Yes," she admitted. "It was not something I had... ever learned, or wanted to learn. I just... knew it. Abyssal, and Infernal. They feel... wrong. Language is not suppose to feel like... anything, really, but those two just don't feel right..."

"I... never found knowing Infernal to be wrong. I just... know it." He frowned some, and shook his head.
"It's a useful tool, especially now. I would look at the positives of your... burdens."

Vanya winced and looked over at Verdi. "I'm sorry. That was rude of me, wasn't it? I didn't mean to insult the language, just..." She shrugged. "In Gilneas, knowing those languages is a black mark. Even my mama did not like me reading them... but then, she was trying to keep some distance between me and my... heritage."
Her gaze was distant as she turned her eyes back to the book. "Knowing the languages is useful, as you say... especially now. I am turning my... burdens... into such tools, as you say. I will rule my power - not be ruled by it."
She paused, and then laughed. "I'm sorry, it sounds so dramatic when I say it like that."

"Quite dramatic." Verdi chuckled, and shook their head. "My mother used infernal when she was upset at one of us, but outside of that, we didn't hear it much..."
He shrugged, and smiled. "No offense taken. I know you have... More of a struggle with what you are than I do."

Vanya laughed and leaned over toward Verdi briefly. "How could anyone be mad at you? You're so quiet and thoughtful. I can imagine a tongue lashing in infernal would be quite a thing to hear."

"My brothers were quite rambunctious, and I would get caught up in their antics. But yes, you think Aegien sounds intimidating..." Verdi smiled, and chuckled again.
"But yes, I have made my mother upset with me a few times. She's... A little overbearing. And being the way I am, she was, and still is, worried sick about me most of the time."

"Oh? I haven't heard much about your family. How many brothers do you have?" Vanya began to trace lines in the book with her finger to keep her place, splitting her attention between Verdi and the abyssal tome.

Verdi didn't talk much about his family, because they were relatively normal. He lifted his brows, and tilted his head some. "Two. Gunther and Adel. Both older than me."

"Gunther? Really?" Vanya looked up at Verdi, blinking. "Gunther, Adel, and Verdi. Huh... and they still live in Aegise?"

Verdi nodded. "Gunther works at a bakery, and Adel is a fisherman's aid."

"A baker, a fisherman, and a far-flung jungle explorer," Vanya marveled with a little laugh. "You really have made a remarkable name for yourself, haven't you?"
