Pheuse, now certain that there was no longer a guard to see him. floated up. He looked across the group getting ready to cast as Neuks dropped her disguise and Tobias returned to Ellie. He paused.
"Alright. Sounds good." He floated over to Porter and shifted position to look like he was riding on his shoulder. He faced Ellie. "Let's do that, though I think that you and Neuks would be the best voice to reach out. No one takes a gnome or a service warforged seriously."
He patted Porter's head. "You know that I don't think that, Porter."

Porter shrugs lightly, shoulder brushing against against Pheuse with their gesture. "Of course, sir." The response is almost automatic -- that habitual formality of theirs. "As much as any of the others, I was made with intention. In my case, that intention did not so much include intimidating." In as much as Porter might seem troubled by things, which is to say seldomly, they don't seem to take Pheuse's joke to heart.
They look between Ellie and Neuks, considering. "I believe they said the people here are refugees from Cyre? If it helps you find assistance, you may mention I served there in the war." They might not have mentioned it before, but Porter had guessed it would be fairly obvious from the intricacies of their design that only one side would have made such a commission from House Cannith.

Neuks nodded to the others, "okay. Let's go see what's going on, Ellie." She strode forward towards the group a step or two, as if she were still pretending to be a big tough body guard, then broke into her normal, much more relaxed (and occasionally slightly bouncy, but only when something caught her interest) walk. She chose to go towards the back of the group, furthest away from the main gates. "Hey, what's happening? Are you okay?"

A young woman pivoted her gaze toward Neuks. The delicate curve of her brow seemed etched with concern, mirrored by the dark circles beneath her eyes.
"Demons!" Her voice trembled as she spoke. "Big black evil things. Didn't... Didn't you see them?" Her words carried a note of both desperation and fear- and perhaps something more.

Ellie jogged to keep up with Neuks, moving forward to join the larger firbolg as she addressed the crowd. Her eyes moved to the young woman, and Ellie gestured to the bow she kept on her back. "We're hunters from another part of the slums. Heard a commotion while out on a stroll and thought we'd investigate."
She looked down the street, where the crowd had likely come from. "These demons, where did you see them? Was anyone hurt?"

Pheuse nodded and silently thanked Porter for understanding. He watched as the others moved ahead of them - as made sense. He looked to his clothing and after a moment of caution removed his hat to better reveal his fairy ears and the electric blue hair beneath. He folded and tucked the hat into his bag and shifted how he was wearing his cloak to attain a more haphazard look.
He watched on as Neuks and Ellie reached and spoke with one of the members of the displaced and frightened crowd. He couldn't make much out from where he was, but expected that as Porter closed the distance he would catch what he needed.

Porter slowly walked in the wake of Neuks and Ellie, letting them keep their distance. It was a better this way, they thought. At least they could keep an eye on the shadows. "Perhaps it's both our strength and weakness, Master Pheuse: that we are built with an intention. Did I ever tell you mine?"
One of the nice things about pretending to sit on the shoulder of a warforged is how regular their pace is. Every creak of cabled musculature, every soft sound of intricate gearing spoke of the next motion.

Neuks looked at Ellie, picking up the 'hunter' ploy (I mean, they kinda were anyway), then back to the lady, "any details you can tell us will help."

The young woman looked them over, shaking her head. "Ye ain't from the slums." She said, sounding... tired. Resigned. "But if you're willing to help us... they was towards Starskid Road." She pointed in the direction the crowd had been coming from. "Big nasty flying monsters, black as shadow."

Elle frowned and looked down the road. "...Alright. Big nasty flying monsters. Black as shadow. Zooming around at night. And still not the most difficult thing I've... hunted."
Elle looked back at the woman and nodded. "Thank you. If the guard won't do anything about them, then maybe we can."
Dramatic.
I thought it was a nice touch!

Pheuse looked to his side at Porter. "No, you hadn't. And I never felt the need to ask." He looked forward to the interaction ahead and spoke softly. "Though from time to time I have wondered."
He didn't pick up what the young woman had said while he was listening and responding to Porter. He did, however, here Ellie reiterate. He looked up and over towards the commotion. Flying shadows ... this might be ... fun.

As they continued forward, Porter's eyes drifted across people and buildings both, and they paused for a moment to watch the gathered crowd. At the corner of their vision Neuks and Ellie were speaking with other woman; they didn't watch them long enough to be obvious, at least, but they kept them in view. Just a strange warforged and shoulder-"gnome" out for a walk during a riot.
"It goes without saying, of course, that all warforged were intended to serve in the War," they began, moving again as they spoke. "Most of us stood on the front line of one side or another, but not all. Those like myself, for example, were a limited commission primarily to Cyre." They paused in their explanation, trying not to talk over the conversation as Pheuse listened in. "We served as attaches and aides-du-camp, where others might be more obtrusive."

"Black flying monsters," Neuks nodded. "Have they hurt anyone yet?"

The woman nodded. "Aye- tore some bloke apart. Some mage, who was trying to stop them. They didn't like him very much... or I supposed they liked him lots."

"Tore apart... Depths below," Ellie swore. "Thank you." Ellie turned away from the woman and began walking down the street at a quick pace. "We should move quickly, before anyone else gets hurt. It might calm the crowd down too."
