"That too." Sae said, letting out a deep breath as she watched the sun begin to set. "I'm a bit nervous about Valor Company. They've been in fights before, and one battle... but always as disruptions. Never as a unified force...."

Ve'ra shrugged. "Aren't your always worried about Valor Company? You've all done pretty well so far. And you've been on the offensive since you've come here."
She looked over at Sae. "What are you worried about?"

"That is fair, yes, I am always worried about them." Sae said, amused at the counterpoint. She continued to watch the sunset.
"Battles are hectic, scrambling messes. Even groups who are trained to fight together often dissolve once the line breaks in a melee. The company are a fantastic offensive force, but happens if- when- we get separated? That sort of thing will get someone killed."

Ve'ra arched an eyebrow at Sae and propped herself up on an elbow. "Get you killed, you mean?"

"I am usually the one getting scraped off the ground." Sae admitted, turning her head to look at Ve'ra. "I know I'm not supposed to care- dolce et decorum est and all that- but I admit I wouldn't mind seeing the ripe old age of twenty six."

"You seem to be doing well so far," Ve'ra observed with a smirk. "Something must be working out right."
And then she paused. "Wait, you're twenty-five?"

Sae nodded. "Fair enough- it might be last minute, but they always do manage to scrape me off the ground. Besides, I'd doubt they'd leave me dead anyway."
As Ve'ra attention turned to the math, she blinked and then nodded. "Yes- I turned twenty-five a couple weeks ago."

Ve'ra laughed. "That explains a lot. You're barely out of your teens!" Ve'ra reached over with one hand and mussed Sae's hair. "Still a youngling, hm?"

Sae laughed as her hair was mussed, turning to face Ve'ra once more. "You knew I was just a high elf in over her head, but you hadn't guessed the extent then?" She asked, her tone was amused. "I thought you had me figured out already. This is still my first mission out of the Black Tower."

"I think I remember you saying something about that. It's a lot of pressure. You know. For someone so young."

Sae chuckled. "You're not that much older than me. And the war... is what it is. I've been a part of it... hells, since we fought at Donal's Crossing, or probably since Kaladin died. I've never learned to walk away from a fight."

"If you ask my brother, the challenge isn't learning to walk away from a fight, it's learning which fights are the ones that matter. And this war is one that matters.
"And for the record, I've never been good at walking away from a fight either."

Sae smiled, tucking herself a bit closer to Ve'ra. "I am slightly less likely to throw myself into every fight like a rabid squirrel these days. Maybe my temper is getting better..."

"Maybe you have more reasons to make it out in one piece," Ve'ra observed coyly.

Sae smiled, arching an eyebrow at Ve'ra- and mimicking her coy tone. "Maybe." She said, before laughing and shaking her head- unable to keep up the facade.
